Storyline

They Call Him OG  Review:

Pawan Kalyan commands the screen with charisma and intensity as OG. His action sequences combine martial arts, swordplay and gritty gunfights, bringing back memories of his performances in Johnny and Badri. Emraan Hashmi makes a strong impact as the menacing Omi, though his character could have used more depth. It still works as a promising debut in this space.

Japanese actor Kazuki Kitamura’s brief but memorable cameo hints at bigger things ahead, keeping fans curious for the sequel. Sriya Reddy delivers a solid performance, while Priyanka Arul Mohan’s Kanmani feels underwritten. Prakash Raj, as Satya Dada, brings authority and intensity, especially in his dynamic with OG. Arjun Das too leaves an impression.Director Sujeeth leans heavily on star power, often at the cost of layered storytelling and character arcs. Several subplots are undercooked, and familiar tropes such as the wife’s murder and the daughter’s kidnapping feel formulaic. Thaman’s rousing soundtrack, however, injects energy into the action sequences.The film has its shortcomings in emotional depth and narrative finesse, but it still succeeds as a stylish action drama with flair.

Empuraan starts out as a brave, bold film. Not for its budget and ambition alone, but also for the subject, with the quite upfront political portrayals.The first half goes with the textbook 'thrill every few minutes' formula. After a brief geopolitical voiceover - about an Afro-China God Axis vs an Indo-Arab Lucifer nexus - and an action sequence in Iran, the story moves to the 2002 riots in west India. It tells the backstory of a young Zayed Masood (Prithviraj), the shadowy figure accompanying Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam in the first film, Lucifer. It’s a villain origin story- or in this case - anti-hero origin story, with Zayed's parents and family facing the brunt of the riots in communal clashes, under a new, rising political order, under a leader named Bajrangi.About two decades later, when the scene shifts to Kerala, our investigative news vlogger, Govardhan (Indrajith), is on a satellite call with an intelligence officer to know why Bajrangi is interested in Kerala. Soon enough, Jathin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas), a once idealistic chief minister, now at odds with his party and sister Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier), reveals in a surprise announcement that he is making a change in his politics. It means, Kerala is going to sink into communal politics.This change compels Govardhan to ask Stephen Nedumpally, whose whereabouts are not known, to return to Kerala. The international wheeler dealer, meanwhile, continues on his ‘narcotics is a dirty business’ (Lucifer reference) drive and destroys a $1billion drug shipment going to Europe via Senegal, from South America. The latter part of the film takes a different trajectory, transitioning into a politically driven narrative rooted in the soil. The screenplay, treatment, and even the colour palette shift to complement this transformation.Thaman's musical score elevates the film, with a soundtrack that complements its themes. Tirru's cinematography captures both the grandeur and grit of the story, employing dynamic visuals that enhance the viewing experience. Editing by Shameer Muhammed and Ruben ensures a cohesive narrative flow. The production values reflect Shankar's commitment to high-quality filmmaking, with grandiose visuals in the song sequences. "Jaragandi" stands out as the highlight track, while the popular "Naanaa Hyraanaa" is yet to make its way into the final cut. The team has announced its inclusion starting January 14.While Game Changer impresses with its grand visuals and socially relevant themes, it falters in areas that detract from its overall impact. When the duo that delivered the iconic Nayakan reunite after three decades, our basic expectation is, if not a masterpiece, at least a memorable moviegoing experience. But with Thug Life, both Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan disappoint, delivering one of their weakest efforts, to make us wonder what they saw in this beaten-to-death storyline to get back together again.The film is a collection of gangster movie clichés - gang rivalry, betrayal, jealousy and vengeance - strung together with a plot that revolves around a fearless, respected and seemingly immortal gangster, Rangaraya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan) and his relationship with Amaran, a boy whose life he accidentally ruins and chooses to raise as his family. He tries to make up for the boy's loss of his father (Ilango Kumaravel) by searching for his lost sister, Chandra, but two decades later, is still unable to.Now, the boy has blossomed into a dashing young gangster (Silambarasan TR), a trusted lieutenant of Sakthivel. Even as the aging gangster faces off with his bitter rival Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar), unbeknownst to him, there's a battle coming his way from his own gang members - his elder brother Manickam (Nassar) and the ambitious Pathrose (Joju George) - who turn Amaran against him. Can Sakthivel, who has come face to face with death quite a few times, still manage to evade its grasp?Despite familiar arcs, the leisurely paced first half manages to hold our interest, at least with the anticipation that there must be something deeper coming soon. A couple of arcs, like the one involving Indrani (Trisha), a bar singer who he rescues and makes his concubine, Jayakumar Rayappa (Ashok Selvan), a cop determined to bring down the gangsters, and Deepak (Ali Fazal), Sadanand's nephew who wants to avenge the killing of his brother, along with the running thread of the search for Chandra, hold promise.But soon, with uninspired writing and weak characterisation, Thug Life becomes a slog. The latter half goes haywire with many of the sub-plots from the earlier portions either being diluted or largely getting shoved away for a long amount of time. Even Amaran goes missing for quite some time. Instead what we get are preposterous scenes of Sakthivel's survival after being shot at or stabbed multiple times. The threat of Sadanand ceases to exist and Deepak feels like a weak antagonist who makes moves that are predictable. Even AR Rahman seems to lose interest and delivers a background score that feels random.The rich production values, especially Ravi K Chandran's glossy visuals, the mystery around the fate of Chandra and the inevitable face-off between Sakthivel and Amaran make us stay invested.

Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is a sincere attempt at retelling revered lore with visual grandeur. While the film opens on a slow and stretched note, it gradually finds its rhythm and builds to a soul-stirring finale. Vishnu Manchu brings sincerity and steadiness to the lead role. Prabhas makes a dynamic appearance as Rudra, energising the screen with his commanding and entertaining presence. Akshay Kumar makes a confident Telugu debut as Lord Shiva, fitting naturally into the film’s spiritual atmosphere. Kajal Aggarwal adds elegance as Parvati, while Mohanlal’s composed portrayal of Kirata brings a quiet strength to the narrative. Mohan Babu is firm and dependable as Mahadeva Shasthri, and R. Sarathkumar leaves an impression as Nathanathudu.The supporting cast, including Brahmanandam, Madhoo, Siva Balaji, Mukesh Rishi, Devaraj, Brahmaji, and others, contribute meaningfully, helping flesh out the world around Thinnadu.While the film hits the dramatic notes effectively, some of the emotional layers, particularly around Thinnadu’s inner conflict and relationships, could have been explored with more depth. The narrative has heart, but a deeper dive into the character's internal struggles would have added more weight to the transformation.That said, Kannappa scores high on visual and musical impact. Sheldon Chau’s cinematography captures the beauty of forested landscapes and celestial moments with finesse, giving the film a rich visual texture. Some of the VFX elements fall short of the film’s ambition, but the overall sincerity of the production shines through. Stephen Devassy’s background score is another strong point, heightening the emotional beats, especially during the intense and moving final act.Watch it if you enjoy sacred stories with strong visual storytelling and emotional payoff. Kannappa ends on a powerful note that resonates with devotees and admirers of culturally rooted cinema.
